Grooms cakes originate from Victorian England, but are now seen more often in the USA. While a wedding cake takes more of a traditional feel, white, ivory with flowers, the grooms cake takes more of a novelty feel. It was taken over to from Britain by American Colonists. It was traditionally a fruitcake soaked in a dark-liquor. Chocolate became popular for grooms cakes in the late 19th Century and can be any flavour such as red velvet, Guinness cake or carrot.
Grooms cakes are usually served at the wedding reception as a second flavour or at the rehearsal dinner.
Variety is the spice of life
The design of the grooms cake usually captures his hobbies, such as sports, cars, etc. The movie Steel Magnolias features a famous scene with a red velvet groom's cake shaped as a giant armadillo.
